Setting Up in Portugal

Setting Up in Portugal – NIFs, Bank Accounts, and Bureaucracy Explained

Portugal is a dream destination, but the red tape can trip you up if you’re not prepared. Here’s how to handle the essentials.

1. NIF – Número de Identificação Fiscal

  • The Portuguese tax ID
  • Needed for: opening a bank account, signing rental contracts, buying property, etc.
  • We can get this for you remotely with power of attorney

2. Portuguese Bank Account

  • Required to apply for the D7 visa
  • Often needed to prove financial solvency
  • We help you open this even before arriving

3. Health Insurance

  • Required for visa and residency
  • Public system is great, but private insurance helps with speed
  • We provide vetted plans for expats

4. SEF Appointments

  1. SEF = Portugal’s immigration authority
  2. After arrival, you must attend a biometric appointment
  3. Waiting lists vary — we book in advance and prep your file

5. Other Essentials

  • Social Security number (NISS)
  • Portuguese SIM card & address registration
  • Utility setup (electric, water, internet)

RDS Group Can:

  • Act as your tax and legal representative in Portugal
  • Prepare and translate documents
  • Schedule your SEF and legal appointments

Skip the bureaucracy headaches — we’ll handle the paperwork while you settle in.
